Google Wants Testers for Mobile AdSense

Google Inc. has begun inviting mobile Web site developers to display Google ads on their sites as part of a limited beta test.

The offer extends to the mobile environment Google's AdSense program which lets Web site developers earn revenue by placing advertisements on their sites. Google runs the backend network that places ads on the sites relevant to site content. Site owners earn revenue when visitors click on the ads.

Sites must be written in one of three mobile markup languages including WML (Wireless Markup Language), XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) and CHTML (Compact HTML) in order to use AdSense for Mobile, according to a Google AdSense for Mobile help page. That's because Google's crawlers must be able to read the page in those languages to determine page content and serve up relevant ads.
A blogger at Self Made Minds said that he received an e-mail invitation from Google on Thursday night to test AdSense for Mobile.

In a statement, Google confirmed that it is conducting a limited beta to test AdSense for mobile. The company plans to evaluate the beta and refine the product based on feedback from users, it said.
Late last year, Google began delivering advertisements along with its mobile search results.

Online giants like Google are increasingly interested in the potential revenue stream from mobile users. "Mobile advertising is a huge opportunity for us starting with the basic premise that there are something like 3 billion or so handsets in the world," said Dilip Venkatachari, director of product management responsible for mobile monetization efforts at Google, in a recent interview. That compares to just around 1 billion PC users on the planet, making for an even larger target market.

6 months later, a report card on Vista

SEATTLE - Chris Pirillo leaned away from his webcam and pointed to his printer/scanner/fax machine, which stopped scanning and faxing after he installed Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system

"I can't live in Vista if the software that I use in my life for productivity does not work," said Pirillo, in the third minute of a 52-minute video he posted on YouTube.
Nearly six months after it launched, gripes over what doesn't work with Vista continue, eclipsing positive buzz over the program's improved desktop search, graphics and security.

With Vista now shipping on most new computers, it's all but guaranteed to become the world's dominant PC operating system — eventually. For now, some users are either learning to live with workarounds or sticking with Vista's predecessor, Windows XP.

Pirillo is geekier than the average user. He runs a network of technology blogs called Lockergnome, and was one of several "Windows enthusiasts" Microsoft asked for Vista feedback early on.
Still, Vista tested even Pirillo's savvy. He fixed the hobbled printer and other problems by installing VMware, a program that lets him run XP within Vista. But when his trial copy expired, he decided the solution was too clunky — and too expensive.

He "upgraded," as he called it, back to XP.
Users' early complaints aren't a threat to Microsoft's dominance in operating systems. The various flavors of Windows run 93 percent of PCs worldwide, according to the research group IDC. Last fiscal year, Windows accounted for about a third of Microsoft's total revenue of $44.3 billion.

Industry analysts say Vista adoption is plodding along as expected, with most consumers and businesses switching over as they replace old hardware with new. IDC analyst Al Gillen said he expects Vista will be installed on the vast majority of computers in about five years, the time it took for XP to reach 84 percent of PCs.
It's too early for industry watchers to know exactly how many people are using Vista. At the same time, it's hard to gauge Vista's success by comparing it to XP, because the PC market has grown tremendously in the last six years.

In early May, Microsoft said it had distributed 40 million copies of Vista, which costs $199 to $399 depending on the version. But it did not specify the number actually sold through to consumers, versus those shipped to computer makers like Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc.

Analysts noted that as many as 15 million of those copies could represent upgrade coupons given to XP buyers during the holidays, before Vista went on sale. Microsoft would not say how many of those customers installed the new system, but Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder estimated just over 12 million U.S. consumers would have Vista by the end of the year, out of about 235 million PCs in the country.
As for the compatibility problems, 2 million devices — such as cameras and printers — now work with Vista, said Dave Wascha, a director in the Windows Client group.

"We are way ahead with Windows Vista right now than where we were when we shipped Windows XP," he said.
Still, it's an uphill battle: Vista interacts differently with programs and peripherals than previous versions of Windows, and some companies have chosen not to spend time and money updating older products. Printer makers, Wascha noted, draw profits from ink cartridges and services, and have little motivation to invest in updating drivers for old hardware.

As a result, many early adopters have made a sport of grumbling about the one device or program they still can't get to work.

And they've ranted about other things, from how hard it is to open Vista's snap-together plastic retail box, to what they see as arbitrary decisions on Microsoft's part to hide common settings and features.
One of the most common annoyances: Microsoft's user account control feature, designed to protect unwitting Web surfers from spyware and viruses that would otherwise install themselves on the hard drive.
Dan Cohen, chief executive officer of Silicon Valley startup Pageflakes, bought a Vista laptop a couple of months ago. After one too many pop-up windows warning of possible threats from the Internet, Cohen switched the control feature off.

Now he gets pop-ups warning him that turning off UAC is dangerous.
"I feel more secure — and more irritated," he said. When Cohen went to buy his wife a new computer in April, he stuck with XP on a laptop from Lenovo Group Ltd.
Some analysts say Microsoft hasn't put enough energy into marketing Vista's benefits to consumers. But it may also be the case that Vista's biggest benefits are ones that cause average PC users' eyes to glaze over, like improved security.

"Everybody wants there to be a repeat of Windows 98 — the excitement, the sales volume, the rate of growth and everything else," said Michael Cherry, an analyst for the independent research group Directions on Microsoft.
At the time of Windows 98's launch, broadband access to the Internet was catching fire and consumers were pumped up about getting a faster, cheaper computer.
There's no such compelling reason to buy Vista, said Gownder, the Forrester analyst.

Businesses, like consumers, are in no hurry to upgrade. Before the business version of Vista landed late last year, a Forrester survey of about 1,600 companies found that 31 percent planned to upgrade within a year, and 22 percent more planned to be running it within two years.
Most businesses think those plans now seem too aggressive, said Forrester analyst Benjamin Gray.
While corporate technology departments are looking forward to some of Vista's security features and easier administration tools, there's little reason to switch if more secure PCs end up choking on a critical piece of software.
"They're waiting for Microsoft to bless it with a service pack," said Gray, referring to a major software update that fixes bugs.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, a member of Microsoft's Vista Technical Adoption Program, started evaluating Vista in January 2006. Today, only 300 of the hospital's 30,000 desktop computers run the software.
Karen Malik, associate director of technical services, said the rollout is behind schedule because several key programs still aren't compatible, including patient scheduling software. Malik knows the software vendors will catch up to Vista — someday. In the meantime, she's not rushing.
"We know eventually we're going to need to move to this operating system," Malik said. "It's not really an option."

Google Establishes Panel Of Health Care Experts

Google has created a health care advisory group of prominent medical and health care experts -- many with an interest in speeding up the use of technology in health care delivery, including online medical searches and sharing of health information.

Chaired by Dean Ornish, founder and president of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, the Google Health Advisory Council has a mission of assisting the search engine firm to help it "better understand the problems consumers and providers face every day and offer feedback on product ideas and development," according to Google.

Another council member, John D. Halamka, CIO at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, is a longtime and prominent advocate of increased use of IT in the delivery of health care. Halamka, who was named chairman of the Healthcare services including Google's search engine.
According to a posting on Google's official blog site late last week, the firm noted that its service is used often by consumers. "We want to help users make more empowered and informed health care decisions, and have been steadily developing our ability to make our search results more medically relevant and more helpful to users," the Google posting states. "We often seek expertise from outside the company, and health is no exception."

Techies rush to dissect Apple's iPhone

SAN JOSE, Calif. - While most iPhone owners couldn't wait to try out their pricey new gadgets, a few raced to break them apart.

The dismantled — and in some cases, permanently busted — iPhones revealed one of Apple Inc.'s closely guarded secrets: The names of the companies that supplied the chips and other electronic components for the highly anticipated device.

The findings sent all but a few of the component makers' stocks higher Monday, the first day of trading since the iPhone — a combination cell phone, music player and wireless Web browsing device — went on sale in the U.S. Friday evening for as much as $600 a pop.

The parts makers stand to profit handsomely if the iPhone proves popular over time. Apple itself has set a target of selling 10 million units worldwide by 2008, gaining roughly a 1 percent share of the cell phone market.

The phone was sold out in most Apple and AT&T stores by Monday afternoon, said AT&T spokesman Michael Coe. He declined to release specific sales figures.
Coe added that most of the activation problems that surfaced over the weekend had been resolved. Some iPhone buyers had trouble switching over to AT&T from their previous wireless carrier, delays that AT&T blamed on overloaded servers, a problem with the company's credit authorization system, and problems transferring customers' business accounts to consumer accounts.

"The issue is essentially behind us now," he said.
But as that problem passed, another glitch emerged. Some iPhone users in Western and Midwestern states were unable to get onto the Internet for several hours Monday because of outages on AT&T's EDGE network that were eventually fixed, Coe said. AT&T said it had not determined what caused the outages but was certain it wasn't due to an influx of iPhone users.

Despite the problems, investors flocked to the iPhone's newly unmasked parts makers.
Among the beneficiaries of Apple's business and the tear-down buzz were semiconductor heavyweights Intel Corp., Broadcom Corp., Texas Instruments Inc. and Infineon Technologies AG as well as lesser-known companies such as Skyworks Solutions Inc. and Linear Technology Corp.
Some researchers said Apple's secrecy surrounding the iPhone's component suppliers is yet another example of the Cupertino-based company's vaunted ability to keep their partners tightlipped even when facing a media frenzy and rampant speculation.

"They're very good at it — and I think they make a point of holding their suppliers to a standard of secrecy, or you could lose the next round if you slip up," said Howard Curtis, vice president of global services for Portelligent, a research company.
The secrecy continued Monday. Most of the component makers either didn't return phone calls or declined to comment.

Much like the examinations of other much-hyped gadgets, the deconstruction of the iPhone was a mad dash to be the first to post online, with minute-by-minute updates on Web sites and the occasional howls of researchers who wound up destroying their iPhones.
Those that released detailed descriptions of the iPhone's innards included sites such as ThinkSecret.com and iFixit.com as well as research companies Portelligent and Semiconductor Insights. Several analysts also published the results of their own tear-downs.
Based on the results, one of the biggest winners is South Korean chip maker Samsung Electronics Co., which is making the main microprocessor used to run the phone's operating system and various applications. Samsung, the world's largest memory chip manufacturer, is also making a type of memory called NAND flash for the iPhone.
Santa Clara-based Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company, is supplying another form of memory, called NOR flash, according to various research firms.

Intel is in the process of unloading its troubled unit that makes the memory, which is primarily used in cell phones, amid fears about its long-term viability with the rise of NAND flash, a cheaper alternative that's commonly found in digital cameras and music players.
Intel's stock rose 53 cents, or more than 2 percent, to $24.27 in Monday trading.

Other chip makers whose stock rose on their involvement with the iPhone included Irvine-based Broadcom Corp., which is making a controller chip believed to be used for managing the touch-screen display. Broadcom's stock price rose 52 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $29.77.
Texas Instruments is supplying a power-management chip. Shares of TI gained 43 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $38.06.
German chip maker Infineon Technologies, which makes parts that handle cellular communications for the iPhone, saw its American Depositary Shares rise 50 cents, or 3 percent, to $17.03.
But it wasn't just the heavyweights who benefited.
Woburn, Mass.-based Skyworks Solutions Inc. was revealed as the supplier of a power amplifier used in the iPhone. Skyworks' shares jumped 26 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $7.61.

Shares of Milpitas-based Linear Technology Corp. rose 50 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $36.68 after the company was identified as the maker of the iPhone's battery charger chip.
Another company profiting from the iPhone is Cambridge Silicon Radio Ltd. out of England. Researchers said the company is responsible for making chips that allow Bluetooth wireless connectivity for the iPhone.
But the iPhone halo didn't touch everyone Monday.
Apple, for one, fell 78 cents, or less than a percentage point, to $121.26.

Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research, attributed the slight drop to profit-taking after a prosperous run over the past year, during which Apple's stock price has more than doubled. On Monday his firm raised its price target for Apple to $165 per share.

Marvell Technology Group Ltd., the Santa Clara-based provider of chips that allow the iPhone to connect over Wi-Fi networks, dropped 13 cents, or less than a percentage point, to $18.08. And Santa Clara-based National Semiconductor Corp., which is apparently making a display chip for the iPhone, fell a penny to $28.26.

Cisco CCNA Certification Exams Retiring In November - Get Certified Now!

If you're working on the Cisco CCNA right now, or even thinking about it, there are changes coming to the CCNA program in November that you need to know about. No reason to worry, these changes are all good news for CCNA candidates.

And the first bit of good news is that you have plenty of time to take and pass the current CCNA exams. In this article, I will outline several advantages to taking the CCNA plunge now before these changes take effect.
The current CCNA exam (640-801) will not be phased out until November 6, which gives you more than enough time to get CCNA certified before then -- even if you haven't started studying yet! Those of you who want to take the two-exam path to CCNA certification should know that the 640-811 ICND and 640-821 INTRO exams will be phased out on that same date.

Cisco's taking the approach that the CCNA certification is no longer an entry-level certification, and this is a welcome change for CCNAs and CCNA candidates alike. I have been writing CCNA ebooks and teaching CCNA courses for several years, and I've always refused to call this an entry-level certification.

The new CCNA exam (640-802) looks to be even more demanding than the current exam, which is another reason to pick up the pace and get certified now! Here are just some of the new topics you'll find on the 640-802 exam:
* Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol * Switch security * IP Version 6 * Router security * Virtual Private Networks * Wireless routing and more

Add these to the topics already found on the current CCNA exam, and you can see that the new CCNA exam will be even more demanding than the current version.
If you choose the two-exam path for the CCNA certification after November 6, you'll need to take two ICND exams - ICND 1 (640-822) and ICND 2 (640-816). This is much tougher than the current path because the INTRO exam will be a thing of the past after November 6! (Passing the ICND 1 exam will earn you the new Cisco Certified Entry
Networking Technician certification, Cisco's new entry-level certification.)

The CCNA will be even more valuable with these changes, so again, even if you've even been thinking about earning the CCNA - now is the time!

The new CCNA exams will actually be available on August 1, but again, I want to emphasize that the current CCNA exams will be available through November 6. My advice to those who want to get CCNA certified before the change is to book your exam now, make sure you choose the right exam number - and get started studying!

EA reorganizes into four business units

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Electronic Arts Inc. said it will reorganize the world's biggest video game publisher into four units, in an efficiency drive by its new chief executive.

Under the plan by CEO John Riccitiello, announced on Friday. EA will consist of units that focus on sports, casual games, its "Sims" virtual dollhouse franchise, and other games.
EA said the changes, which will not involve job losses, should help it save money at a time when the cost of developing a top-tier game can run up to $20 million.

"It makes a lot of sense. It streamlines the company," said Todd Greenwald, an analyst with Nollenberger Capital Partners.
"It goes with Riccitiello's desire to make people more accountable. When a game misses a deadline, when the quality is bad, he wants one person to explain why," Greenwald said.

Riccitiello, the company's former chief operating officer who left in 2004 and rejoined in April, said last month that he intended to realign the company and improve its ability to act quickly.
"He's had a very strong and aggressive change agenda and what he's been framing as a challenge to the management team is that we are facing a market that is incredibly diverse and complex," said Frank Gibeau, head of the new EA Games unit.

The change "streamlines decision-making, increases speed to market, enhances accountability and allows us to be more experimental, so we can really open up and leverage our scale long-term," Gibeau said in an interview.
The changes, based on the success of a pilot program that placed games based on "The Sims" franchise into their own unit, mean it will require fewer executives to sign off on new games or to approve launching an existing game on a different platform or in a different regions.

"We ran an organizational experiment and it was pretty damn successful. The Sims grew aggressively," Gibeau said.
Gibeau will be in charge of the largest unit of EA games, including its "Battlefield" series of online shooters, "Need for Speed" street-racing titles, and its "Command & Conquer" strategy games.

EA Sports, which includes the company's "Madden" football, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" golf and "NASCAR" racing games, will be run by Executive Vice President Joel Linzner until a permanent head can be found.

Earlier this month, EA recruited Kathy Vrabeck, former head of publishing for rival Activision Inc., to run its casual games unit. Such games, which are usually played online or on mobile phones, are a small but rapidly growing part of the industry.

U.S. FTC warns of bogus e-mail containing spyware

San Francisco (IDGNS) - A bogus e-mail message supposedly sent by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission contains spyware and targets corporate and banking executives as well as consumers, the FTC said Monday.

The bogus e-mail poses as an acknowledgment of an FTC complaint filed by the recipient and includes an attachment. E-mail recipients who open the attachment to this e-mail can download malicious spyware onto their computers, the FTC said.

Recipients shouldn't open the e-mail; instead they should delete the message, the FTC advised.
The hoax e-mail is personalized, containing the name of the recipient and their business. The bogus message explains how the complaint will be used and says, "Attached you will find a copy of your complaint. Please print a hard copy of the complaint for your records in the upcoming investigation."

Consumers can learn more about protecting themselves from malicious spyware and bogus e-mail messages at OnGuardOnline.gov, a Web site created by the FTC in partnership with other federal agencies and the technology industry to help consumers stay safe online. The site includes information on spyware and phishing.

Sony: Sorry for cathedral shootout game

LONDON - Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). apologized Friday to the Church of England for a violent computer game that features a bloody shootout inside an Anglican cathedral.
The church had demanded withdrawal of the game "Resistance: Fall of Man," which includes a gunbattle between an American soldier and aliens inside a building that resembles Manchester Cathedral in northwest England.

The cathedral's dean, the Very Rev. Rogers Govender, said he had received a letter from Sony.
"It was not our intention to cause offense by using a representation of Manchester Cathedral in chapter eight of the work," the letter said. "If we have done so, we sincerely apologize."

A Sony spokesman confirmed the letter was genuine and said it included the offer of a meeting between Sony representatives and church officials. Govender said the cathedral would accept the offer. He thanked Sony for the apology, but underlined the church's opposition to violence, "and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the cathedral."

He said the church wanted to discuss its outstanding demands, which include withdrawal of the game and a donation to the church's education department, which works to fight gun violence in Manchester.
Earlier this week, the church called for Japanese citizens to join in a campaign against the game, which was manufactured for Sony's new PlayStation 3 console.
"For a global manufacturer to recreate the interior of any religious building such as a mosque, synagogue, or in this case, a cathedral, with photo realistic quality and then encourage people to have gunbattles in the building is beyond belief and in our view highly irresponsible," Govender said Wednesday.

Tony Blair told lawmakers that companies like Sony should focus on their wider social responsibilities and not just profit. The church was particularly concerned because Manchester has a history of gang-related gun violence.
In its letter, Sony said it did not accept "that there is any connection between contemporary issues in 21st century Manchester and the work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens."

"We believe a comprehensive viewing of the work will make its content and context clear," Sony said, adding that "Resistance: Fall of Man" has sold more than 2 million units around the world.

Miss America partners with software firm

OKLAHOMA CITY - Having already helped police target sexual predators online, Miss America Lauren Nelson now is teaming with a security software company to help educate parents and children about dangers on the Internet
Nelson, 20, will join officials from Symantec Corp. as a tractor-trailer with the latest in digital technology travels to stores, camps and universities across the country, trying to bring together parents with little Internet familiarity and their cyber-savvy children.

"Hopefully we can help close that gap and create a dialogue with kids and parents about Internet safety," Nelson said. "We're doing things all over the country and speaking about the issue."
Nelson made Internet safety her platform issue, prompted in part by an experience she and two of her friends had with a stranger they encountered on the Internet when they were about 13.

"We were chatting innocently on the computer when we were approached by an older gentleman," the Lawton beauty queen said. "He later sent inappropriate pictures of himself, and that's when we alerted our parents.
"If it was a problem seven years ago, it's an even bigger problem now."
In April, Nelson helped investigators in Suffolk County, N.Y., with an undercover sex sting. Eleven men were arrested after Nelson created an online profile of a 14-year-old girl that included photographs of her as a teenager.

"Doing the sting operation really opened my eyes to the way these predators work," Nelson said. "They can be any age, look any way and have any background."
While parents may fear the prospect of their children being approached by a stranger on the Internet or lured away to a face-to-face meeting, a much more common danger for children on the Internet is cyberbullying, said Marian Merritt, an Internet safety advocate for Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec.

Merritt described cyberbullying as using the Internet or digital technology to harass someone by posting things like hurtful comments, misrepresentations or unflattering photos. With the growing popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, surveys show more than 40 percent of teens have experienced some form of cyberbullying in the last year, Merritt said.

"These things can be incredibly damaging, especially to a young child," she said. "An adult can have a hard time, but for a kid it can be even worse."

Ohio changes policies after massive data theft
Disk with info on 64,000 state employees was taken from intern’s car

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A 22-year-old intern was given the responsibility of safeguarding the personal information of thousands of state employees, a security procedure that ended up backfiring.
The names and Social Security numbers of all 64,000 Ohio state employees were stolen last weekend from a state agency intern who left a backup data storage device in his car, Gov. Ted Strickland said.

An additional review of data revealed that the storage device also held information on 53,797 participants enrolled in the state’s pharmacy benefits management program, as well as names and Social Security numbers of about 75,532 dependents, the governor’s office confirmed Saturday. Strickland has asked Ohio Inspector General Tom Charles to investigate.

What officials don’t know is whether the thief is an unsuspecting common car burglar or a computer-literate opportunist with the capability of unlocking the code encrypting thousands of Social Security numbers.
Either way, Strickland said the security procedure failed, and he issued an executive order to change the practices for handling state data.

Officials were still determining whether the storage device contains any other personal information.
“Obviously, I feel badly this has happened, on a human level. As an executive, I’m trying to be transparent and we’re looking for ways to mitigate any harm. I remain hopeful there will be no breach of private information,” Strickland said.
$15 storage deviceThe governor said he was not allowed to specifically describe the computer device or other details surrounding the theft, under direction from law enforcement.
The device — listed in a police report as being worth $15 — was reported stolen along with a $200 radar detector out of Jared Ilovar’s car.

A message seeking comment was left for Ilovar, a college senior making $10.50 an hour as an intern with the Office of Management and Budget.
Under protocol in place since 2002, a first backup storage device is kept at a temporary work site for a state office along with the computer system that holds all the employee information, and a second backup device is given to employees on a rotating basis to take home for safekeeping, officials said.
Strickland said it was inappropriate for an intern to be designated that responsibility, and he ordered an end to the practice of employees taking the devices home. State Budget Director Pari Sabety said the device now would be stored in another location in a locked, fireproof box.

It was just the latest case of personal information on thousands of employees disappearing or being inappropriately accessed. Several universities, including Ohio State University and Ohio University, and even the Veterans Affairs Department have reported lost or stolen data.
In the Ohio case, Dawn Rice, an employee in the state Senate clerk’s office, wasn’t that bothered that sensitive information was being transported in cars on inexpensive equipment.

“I think it’s not that big of a deal,” she said. “The person who stole it would really have to know what he’s doing.”

iPhones only at AT&T, Apple stores

SAN ANTONIO - Customers clamoring to get their hands on Apple Inc.'s highly anticipated iPhone better make sure they're at the right store.

The combination cell phone, media player and wireless Web device will only be sold at stores owned by Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc., which has an exclusive deal to offer service for the device when it's launched June 29. It will also be available at launch on Apple's Web site.

The device goes on sale at 6 p.m. local time in each U.S. market.

AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook said the limited availability will only be for the initial launch. Later, it will be sold on AT&T's Web site and through other outlets.

AT&T owns 1,800 retail stores — which it has been rebranding from Cingular since taking over complete ownership late last year — but thousands of other franchise outlets carry the AT&T or Cingular name. In all, AT&T has 8,000 franchise outlets and retail carriers, though retailers usually carry AT&T competitors as well.

Cook said the AT&T-owned stores are branded that way, whereas other franchise outlets still carry the Cingular name.

The iPhone will sell for $499 and $599, but AT&T has not disclosed what the contract service fees will be.

The device, which uses a touch-sensitive screen rather than a keypad, has been hotly anticipated with more than 1 million people signing up with AT&T to receive notice when the device is available. Apple has not indicated how many units will be available at launch.

Google Gears Draws Developers

Developers have big plans for Gears, the Google Inc. browser plug-in designed to provide offline access to Web-hosted applications.

Although Gears has only been available for about two weeks in an early-stage version, many developers have rushed to give it a test drive and brainstorm for new ways to use it.
The response to Gears reflects the rising demand for using Web-hosted applications without necessarily being connected to the Internet.
Dustin Hand is looking at Gears for a Web application he is creating for an American Red Cross chapter in Tallahassee, Florida. The application must have an offline component so that it can be used even if a major disaster knocks out Internet access.

The application will be used to manage the list of local Red Cross volunteers, and will contain these people's contact information along with their skills.
Once completed and implemented in the Red Cross' Capital Area Chapter of Florida, the application will be pitched for adoption in Red Cross offices nationwide.

"Ensuring that a Web application such as this works during a disaster regardless of the outside [Internet access] networks being down is of top priority," Hand, a Red Cross volunteer IT coordinator, said via e-mail.
Gears, an open source browser extension, contains three components. The first is a local server for caching and delivering "application resources" like HTML and JavaScript without a server connection. The second piece is a database that will allow for storing and accessing data from within the browser. The final component is what Google calls "a worker thread pool," designed to boost Web applications' responsiveness by carrying out operations in the background.

Before Google released Gears at the end of May, Hand was considering hosting the volunteers' database physically in the Red Cross offices for offline access.
However, the chapter lacks the infrastructure to have database access on site. Its Web hosting company could house the database, but then it would be located off site and possibly unavailable in the event of a disaster.
"Google Gears would allow us to use our existing infrastructure-- our off-site database-- in the event of Internet connectivity failure, allowing us to continue to provide expedited service to the victims," Hand wrote.
He acknowledges that Gears still needs significant improvement for usage in production applications, something Google has also made clear.

Although Gears is available to anyone as a free download, at this point it's intended mostly for developers who can give Google feedback to improve the product. Google also hopes to push Gears as an industry standard for offline access to Web-hosted applications.
Another developer with high hopes for Gears is Brandon Kraft from the University Catholic Center campus ministry of the University of Texas at Austin.
Kraft hopes Gears will allow him to give an offline component to a variety of Web-hosted resources available to university students and staff.

Like other early testers, Kraft plans to wait for Gears to mature before using it in production applications. So far, he has run into a few kinks, including a clunky synchronization indicator.
Kraft also stumbled with a known issue that has prevented proxy server users from installing Gears. After the installer failed twice on him, Kraft put Gears aside. A week later, he delved into the issue and, after 20 minutes, worked around it.
"For the average consumer, once they get an error message [during the installation], they won't come back," Kraft said in a phone interview.
The proxy server issue, flagged repeatedly in discussion forums, has caused some developers to take Google to task, a sign that with the high expectations also come strong feelings. Many corporate developers connect to the Internet via a proxy server.

However, by the end of next week, the installer's problem with proxy server connections will be solved for most users, a Google spokesman said Friday.
Google already started updating its servers with the latest version of the Gears installer, and some users have downloaded it already.
"The update will be finished by next week, at which point you can be sure of getting the latest version of the installer from the Gears Web site," the spokesman said via e-mail.
Despite its bugs, Gears has also generated enthusiasm among IT security experts.
"I strongly believe that light footprint on the end-point device-- the user's computer-- makes for strong security. Because of that, I always prefer Web applications to installed applications," Maxime Rousseau, a security consultant with Sociiti Conseil Lambda Inc. in Quibec, Canada, said via e-mail.

Despite liking Google's Docs & Spreadsheets Web-hosted application suite, Rousseau doesn't recommend it to clients, saying that it's not fast enough due to Web pages' lagging responses. He believes that Google will eventually address those issues, however.
Although interest is high among users for Gears to support Docs & Spreadsheets, Gmail and other Google hosted applications, Gears currently only supports one Google application: the Reader RSS syndicated feed manager.
"Something like Google Gears has been needed for the Web for quite a long time, and as far as I can tell, it is a nicely structured architecture," Hand, from the Red Cross, wrote.

Web site harnesses China's culture of connections

BEIJING (Reuters) - Those elusive connections that in China can ensure personal or business gain are just a click away thanks to a new Web site, state media said on Thursday.

China is known for its millennium-old business culture centered on "guanxi," or connections, the bulk of which these days are nurtured through agreements reached via cash-stuffed envelopes at dinner tables or on the golf course.

"Since its founding in March, Zhike.com has been seeking out the kind of connections that can help people enroll a child in the right primary school, get help from the government with business and even meet a celebrity - for a price," the China Daily said.

Ten requests recently posted were "looking for friends in government." Three were from parents who wanted to be connected to teachers at kindergartens or primary schools.

One person who used the Web name "love 5433" said he had just moved to Shanghai, wanted his child to go to a good kindergarten and would offer 1,000 yuan ($130) to whoever could help.

"Lawyers said the Web site would be held responsible if its services led to bribery," the newspaper said.

"Officials with the Shanghai industrial and commercial administrative bureau said they would keep an eye on it."

eBay in patent fight over 'Buy It Now'

NORFOLK, Va. - A small Virginia company in a patent fight with eBay Inc. asked a federal judge Tuesday to stop the online auction powerhouse from using its "Buy It Now" feature allowing shoppers to buy items at a fixed price.

A federal jury found in 2003 that eBay had infringed Great Falls-based MercExchange LLC's patent. But last year, the
U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to patent-reform advocates when it ruled that MercExchange was not automatically entitled to a court order blocking the offending service.

Now, U.S. District Court Judge Jerome B. Friedman must decide whether MercExchange is entitled to a permanent injunction. The judge did not say when he would rule.

Friedman also did not immediately rule on eBay's request to stay the proceedings until the federal patent office has completed a re-examination of the patent — a process that MercExchange's lawyers said could take 10 years.

Lawyers for San Jose-based eBay told the judge that the company has designed a workaround so that it no longer infringes on the patent and thus an injunction is unnecessary.

Attorney Jeff Randall also said MercExchange has not suffered irreparable harm and that the company is better off now than it was before the trial, citing an investment by a hedge fund.

MercExchange's attorneys, however, argued that the potential for future infringement is at stake and that MercExchange will not be able to sell exclusive licenses for use of its patent without an injunction.

"Without an injunction in the face of an infringing monopolist that now has 95 percent of the market, MercExchange cannot make productive use of its patent in any way," lawyer Seth Waxman said.

Randall said an injunction would give MercExchange "illegitimate leverage," hurting eBay's reputation in the marketplace by making people think eBay is still infringing the patent.

"That's what they want," Randall said of MercExchange.
Randall also said MercExchange is not interested in building its business.

"They sit back and try to collect from businesses for their patents, and that is it," he said.
In arguing for a stay, Randall said waiting for the outcome of the patent re-examination would save a lot of litigation in the meantime.

"I get the impression that, in a nice legal way, the court is being threatened," the judge said.
MercExchange attorney Greg Stillman said it was wrong to wait for patent authorities to sort everything out and that eBay could have avoided a lot of litigation by asking for the re-examination much earlier.

The patent battle focuses on eBay's button for buying products at a fixed price, bypassing the bidding process, and MercExchange's claim that the technology infringes on its intellectual property.
The federal jury that sided with MercExchange awarded the company $35 million. The amount later was reduced to $25 million. Stillman said outside court that MercExchange intends to ask the judge to increase the damages to take into account infringement since the 2003 trial.

The Supreme Court's ruling does not affect the judgment against eBay.
In the closely watched case, the high court ruled that judges have flexibility in deciding whether to issue court orders barring continued use of a technology after juries find a patent violation. The decision threw out a ruling by a federal appeals court that said injunctions should be automatic unless exceptional circumstances apply.

The case became a rallying point for critics who argue the U.S. patent system is riddled with abuse from small businesses that sue established companies to enforce patents for ideas that have never been developed into products.
